About Khenpo Paljor Gyatso

Khenpo Paljor Gyatso is a lama from the Kathok lineage of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism who has attain the highest level (i.e., Khenpo) of education in the theory and practice of Buddhism in the non-sectarian tradition of the great Larung Gar Monastic University in Serta, Tibet. This background emphasizes the value and utility of all the traditional schools of Buddhism. Khenpo was born in Amdo, Tibet, to a family of devout Buddhist practitioners. He entered monastic life at the age of 9 under the guidance of his first spiritual teacher, Choktrul Kadag Rinpoche.

 

Admitted to Larung Gar Buddhist Academy at the age of 16, he studied there for 12 years with many great masters and distinguished professors, especially his root Guru, Khenchen Jigme Phuntsok and his successor Khenchen Tsultrim Lodro. During these years of intensive study, he learned grammar, composition, poetry, history, philosophy, and the vast teachings of Sutra and Tantra and their commentarial traditions in the various schools and lineages of Buddhism. He received many empowerments, oral transmissions and essential precepts of the various schools, and especially of the profound Dzogchen transmission.

He distinguished himself as an excellent scholar among the 9000 students at Larung Gar, and at the young 28 received the title of Khenpo. Since 2004 Khenpo has served as lecturer and collaborator with Dr. Robert W. Clark, the Coordinator of the Tibetan Language Program at Stanford University, giving lectures and leading classes there.

 

As a teacher, he is known for his humility, wisdom, warmth and humor. Khenpo teaches in a relaxed and direct style that is accessible to both beginners and seasoned practitioners of Buddhist meditation and philosophy. Khenchen Tsultrim Lodro, the leader and head of Larung Gar Monastery, has asked Khenpo Paljor Gyatso to provide traditional Buddhist teachings to willing and qualified students in North America in accordance with the teaching obligation of Buddhist monks who have received the treasures of the Lord Buddha's Dharma and the special transmissions and commentaries of their lineage.
